Mandar Chitre

Associate Professor & Head

Mandar Chitre is currently the Head of the ARL at Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) and an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) of the National University of Singapore (NUS). He also holds a joint position as the Associate Director (Marine Robotics) with A*STAR Marine and Offshore Programme Office (MOPO). Prior to joining the ARL in 2003, he headed the technology division for a Singapore based telecommunication software company for 5 years.

Mandar was awarded a Ph.D. by NUS for his research in the field of underwater acoustic communications in warm shallow waters. Prior to this, he obtained a Masters degree from NUS developing simulations and algorithms for Ambient Noise Imaging, and another Masters degree in Bioinformatics from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Mandar's research interests include underwater acoustic signal processing, underwater communications & networking, ambient noise imaging (ANI), and cooperative underwater robotics.

Mandar serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, and is the Technical Chair for the upcoming IEEE OCEANS 2020 Singapore conference. He has also served on several editorial boards and conference committees.

Apart from academic interests, Mandar has a passion for photography, computing technology, scuba diving, chillis, wine and contract bridge. He also enjoys a good game of squash and badminton.
