NUS researchers Hari Vishnu and Koay Teong Beng highlight the importance of acoustic monitoring as a long-term tool for marine conservation and coastal management. Through their involvement in an NParks-funded acoustic monitoring project that recorded marine mammal vocalisations from 2019 to 2022, they showed how sound-based monitoring can identify where and when marine mammals are present, even when they are not visually detectable. Their findings support NParks’ move to introduce guidelines on underwater noise, as acoustic monitoring provides a science-based means to assess the impact of marine construction activities on marine mammals and to plan appropriate mitigation measures.
